The Countdown to Spring is On!

We’ve reached the final month of winter, and the signs of spring are starting to show. Golden wattles are blooming, spring bulbs are pushing up through the soil, and bare trees are ready to burst into life. August is the month of garden prep — it’s time to get things in order for the season of abundance just around the corner.

Here’s your August Gardening Guide to help you get the most from your garden this season:

Soil & Garden Bed Prep

  • Add compost and well-rotted manure to enrich garden beds for spring planting.
  • In clay or heavy soils, use Gypsum or Groundbreaker to improve structure and drainage.
  • Apply Lime to vegie patches now (but avoid acid-loving plants like camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, and daphnes).

What to Sow & Plant Now

  • As the soil warms, sow Carrot, Parsnip, and Beetroot seeds — cover lightly with seed raising mix.
  • Plant seedlings of Spinach, Silverbeet, Spring Onions, Leeks, and Onions.
  • Start early crops of Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, and Brussels Sprouts.
  • Sow Peas in limed, organic-rich trenches (30–40 cm deep), with good drainage and full sun (6–8 hours daily).
  • It’s also time to plant Rhubarb, Asparagus crowns, and herb gardens — perfect for pots or garden beds.
  • Seed Potatoes
Our seed potatoes are available in store and online — including gourmet and well-known varieties. Potatoes are easy and rewarding to grow in Tasmania, but stocks don’t last long, so get in quick!

Fruit & Citrus Time

  • Deciduous fruit trees (like apples, pears, plums) are ready to plant now.
  • It’s also a great time to plant small fruits and berries, plus lemons, limes, oranges, and mandarins — with dwarf varieties perfect for pots.
  • Ask our team for help choosing the right varieties for your garden.

Flowering & Colour

  • Plant roses now for stunning blooms through spring and summer — we have an excellent range in stock.
  • Native plants are starting their fresh spring displays and are a great way to attract pollinators.
  • Prepare for the arrival of summer bulbs like Peony Rose, Lilium, and Lily of the Valley.

Garden Tasks & Maintenance

  • If you haven’t finished rose pruning, it’s not too late — aim to get it done this month. Apply Lime Sulphur to control pests and diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew. Clear fallen leaves and debris, then mulch to protect roots and suppress weeds. A little care now means beautiful roses later!
  • Lift and divide any perennials that have overwintered in the ground.
  • Weekly feeding of winter flowering annuals with Macroboost Blooming Lot will give one last colourful burst before spring.
  • Start clearing and levelling soil for new lawns to be sown in September.

Grow Anywhere

Whether you have a backyard, patio, or balcony — growing food and flowers in pots, containers, and baskets is convenient and rewarding. No matter where you live, you can grow something beautiful and edible!

Pest Control & Plant Health

  • Treat stone fruit for leaf curl now — timing is crucial! (Check our blog for guidance.)
  • Set Codling Moth traps in apples and pears — replace old ones with fresh refills.
  • Watch out for lawn grubs! Treat now with Lawn Beetle & Grub Killa to prevent damage and protect your lawn long-term.
